(More customer reviews)I was skeptical at first due to the low price, especially after seeing night vision scopes for kids at $40.The packaging is a bugger to open, but as a hunter, I can tell you that it's non-slip rubber coating provides for good grip control and one-handed operation. At twilight the monocular does not need the infra-red, just the normal light-gathering works great.Once it got real dark with no moon, I could still see, but not as well as I had hoped until I remembered to TAKE OFF THE CAP! I was very impressed! I could see trees about 50 yards away. When I turned on the IR (very powerful for it's size!), I could see individual trees and bushes over 200 yards away. This is a handy unit to have for emergencies and works farther than a standard flashlight will. To prolong battery life, I have found that if you do not need to use the IR (bright stars, full moon) just turn on the unit for a few minutes, then turn it off again and the luminescence of the internal tube will still remain active for several minutes, or just continue using it without the IR turned on.Now for the down side... Once it's focused, it's crystal clear, but you have to adjust the diopter AND the focus ring to find the right combo. Also, this would be nicer if it had no magnification at all because it can produce a minor fish-eye effect until the diopter is focused. Not a real big downer, just something to be aware of.I would recommend this as an aid to any hiker or camper who finds themselves caught out on the trail after sunset (Hunters know what I mean) - this will save your butt! You can read a map with it and still follow trails back to camp. This comes with a belt pouch and is a little bigger than a rangefinder, but just as handy. Star gazers will also be floored by what they will see! I looked at Orion's Belt and could not believe how many stars it picked up that are not visible to the naked eye. This is not like the units for $thousands$ that you see on TV shows, but I believe it is worth the price for what it is.I would buy another if/when needed.
